Sources: Saints make bid for Townsend

Andros Townsend could be on his way to Southampton if Tottenham accept the Saints' offer.

Southampton have made Tottenham an offer for their England winger Andros Townsend, sources have told ESPN.

Townsend signed a new four-year contract at Tottenham last October after his sparkling performances in England's final two World Cup qualifiers propelled him from a rising star into a player seemingly ready to establish himself in the Premier League.

Yet injuries and a dip in form have halted Townsend's rise during 2014 and he appears to be a player on the periphery of new Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino's plans after he was again left out of the side for Sunday's game against QPR.

ESPN reported last week that Southampton were eager to bring Townsend to the south coast and they have followed up that initial interest with a firm bid for the player, who may view the potential move a chance to secure regular football and re-launch his career with club and country.

Our sources tell us that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is keen to recruit players with proven Premier League experience in a summer that has seen him club lose experienced performers like Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

Townsend, 23, is viewed by Koeman as a player who can make an instant impact in his side following the recent arrivals of Fraser Forster from Celtic and Shane Long from Hull.

Reports suggest a fee in the region of 12 million pounds could be enough to prize Townsend away from Tottenham, with Southampton seemingly willing to meet that asking price.
