Marco van Ginkel joins PSV Eindhoven from Chelsea as Stoke loan is ended

Marco van Ginkel in action for Stoke City this season.

Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has joined PSV Eindhoven until the end of the season after cutting short his loan spell at Stoke City, the Premier League champions have confirmed.

Van Ginkel moved to the Britannia Stadium on a season-long deal last summer in search of first-team experience, but has since started just eight Premier League matches under Mark Hughes and was set to find his opportunities further limited by the arrival of Giannelli Imbula from Porto.

The 23-year-old became the first signing of Jose Mourinho's second spell at Stamford Bridge in July 2013 when he left Vitesse in a deal reported to be worth around £8 million.

He tore his anterior cruciate ligament just two months into his Chelsea career during a Capital One Cup win over Swindon Town and missed the rest of the season.

Ankle problems hampered Van Ginkel during a subsequent loan at AC Milan last season and having failed to establish himself as a regular starter at Stoke, the Dutchman will now look to get his career back on track with Guus Hiddink's former club in his homeland.

PSV sit top of the Eredivisie, one point clear of rivals Ajax, and moved to secure Van Ginkel on loan after Mexico international Andres Guardado picked up a hamstring injury during Saturday's 4-2 win over De Graafschap.
