Gianluigi Buffon expected Friday for PSG medical ahead of deal - source

The FC crew weigh the pros and cons of PSG's reported interest in Gianluigi Buffon and ponder whether Financial Fair Play is a factor.

PARIS -- Legendary Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is expected in Paris on Friday to undergo his Paris Saint-Germain medical and put pen to paper on a two-year contract, a source close to the transfer has told ESPN FC.

In May, sources said PSG offered the 40-year-old shot-stopper a two-year deal and Buffon's agent Silvano Martina, as well as his lawyer Luca Miranda, swiftly visited the French capital to iron out the details.

And after a significant waiting period because of UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP), the former Juventus man is finally expected in France this week and should be unveiled by the French champions on Monday, according to the source.

Buffon has agreed his deal, which includes an ambassadorial role for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He will be Thomas Tuchel's first signing as PSG coach.

The ex-Azzurri star's signing ticks a number of boxes -- his arrival strengthens a position of need while working within UEFA's FFP regulations and it also enables sporting director Antero Henrique to potentially cash in on one of Alphonse Areola or Kevin Trapp.

Although Buffon is the France international's idol, not to mention a player with experience and knowledge to pass on to Areola and not necessarily a long-term positional rival, the source indicated that the youth academy graduate is unsure of the Italian's arrival.

Buffon recently hinted that he will continue to play and the next stop in his storied career will be Parc des Princes.

"If things are to continue, we will see -- if it is the case, then it is because I have a lot of motivation, which is pushing a 40-year-old to want to put himself to the test again, and live more emotions," Buffon said.

"The emotions you feel when you are playing are hard to feel in life, and probably there is also the need and desire to show how good you are and how well you can perform, in spite of your age. These are the small challenges that each of us accept.

"I am extremely proud of how it ended [with Juventus]. It ended on a high and enthusiastically, with a very beautiful farewell with the president, my teammates, directors and the fans. It was something strong, beautiful and deserved, because I received a lot in 17 years, but I think I gave all that I had for the cause.

"So, when there is this awareness and serenity of having given everything, you are happy when this story has such an ending. Juve's strength was not Buffon or an individual, but the strength of planning and clarity of ideas, of the whole group. Juve will continue to be protagonists."
