Jackson Martinez joins Portimonense on loan from Guanzghou Evergrande

Jackson Martinez has returned to Europe after signing a season-long loan deal with Portimonense who currently sit bottom of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Martinez is still officially contracted to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande, but has not played an official match since 2016. The former Porto striker insisted he would show "maximum dedication and commitment" and claimed he would be "wrong to think about scoring before a match," during his unveiling.

However, he took a more philosophical approach on Instagram, giving thanks to God for the opportunity.

Martinez first came to the attention of many in Europe following his performances with Porto, where he finished as the Primeira Liga's leading goal scorer for three consecutive seasons from 2013-15.

He scored twice at the 2014 World Cup, with both goals coming in Colombia's 4-1 group match victory over Japan, and helped his country reach the quarterfinals in Brazil. A year after the tournament, he joined Atletico Madrid for €35 million but struggled in La Liga.

Martinez managed just three goals in 22 appearances and despite still yielding interest from the likes of Arsenal, opted for a move to Guangzhou in February 2016, with the Chinese side paying Atletico €42m.

He would make 16 appearances in the subsequent eight months but has not played for the club since October 2016.
