Sunderland close on Cristian Rodriguez

The Uruguay international wants regular first-team football.

Sunderland are close to sealing a deal for Atletico Madrid's Cristian Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, 28, who starred for Uruguay at the World Cup is keen for more regular action after spending last season coming off the bench in Atletico's title-winning campaign.

The midfielder is apparently keen to link up with fellow countryman Gus Poyet and the Sunderland boss is equally excited to bring the player to the Stadium of Light.

"He's desperate to be at a club where he can play week after week," Poyet said, in quotes reported by Football Espana. "There are a lot of positive things and there is something to be achieved, to agree a deal when a player like him is available."
