Canada back Common Goal ahead of World Cup

ESPN's Julie Foudy feels Canada will clearly emerge from Group E, but questions if they can get over the hurdle in the latter stages.

The Canadian women's national team have got behind Common Goal ahead of the World Cup.

Fifteen players and one staff member have pledged one percent of their salaries to the charity initiative, spearheaded by Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, which has already raised $1.3 million.

The group, which includes 35-year-old captain Christine Sinclair and 18-year-old Jordyn Huitema, follow goalkeeper Erin McLeod who signed up in February.

Canada captain Christine Sinclair scored her 180th international goal to secure a 1-0 victory over England in a Women's World Cup warmup on Friday.

Sinclair scored in the 81st minute, pouncing after Nichelle Prince's shot came off the crossbar in front of 5,682 fans at the Manchester City Academy Stadium.

Canada women win 6-0 while playing in unusual 2-4-4 formation

Christine Sinclair scored her 159th career goal, passing American Mia Hamm for second on the women's career list on Sunday.

Who needs defenders anyway? Canada's women's team certainly don't after thrashing Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 in an Olympic qualifier on Sunday.
