Odd statue of Arsenal and Chile star Alexis Sanchez is unveiled

Alexis Sanchez
Alexis Sanchez's statue display is repainted after the Colo Colo badge was vandalised.

Alexis Sanchez had a disappointing evening on Thursday as Chile lost to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier, but he had far more to cheer about on Saturday.

The Arsenal forward visited his home city of Tocopilla to unveil a statue, created by Marco Vergara, that has been erected in his honour.

It's not your usual statue, however, with Sanchez in full Chile kit and looking more like a life-sized cartoon -- complete with Hollywood Walk of Fame-esque handprints and footprints.

Argentina pushed Chile out of the top five in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying thanks to a Lionel Messi penalty kick.

Messi's 16th-minute penalty at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti saw Edgardo Bauza's men get their qualification campaign back on track as they climbed into third place in the CONMEBOL standings.

The defeat saw Chile drop to sixth, but just a point adrift of Colombia who hold the final automatic qualifying berth in fourth.

Alexis Sanchez's temper tantrum fuels Chile transfer jokes

Argentina pushed Chile out of the top five in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying thanks to a Lionel Messi penalty kick.

Arsenal fans have poked fun at Alexis Sanchez's latest temper tantrum by saying he could be ready to switch national teams.

Sanchez's angry outbursts after Arsenal losses this season have fuelled speculation he wants to leave the club this summer after getting fed up with their struggles. So after seeing a similar tantrum when his beloved Chile lost 1-0 to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier, social media analysts were quick to point out what it all means.
