Ecuador must capitalize on bright future after South American U20 Championships win

Ecuador
Ecuador won the South American Under-20 Championships on Sunday.

Ecuador's first ever title in the South American Under-20 Championships is a surprise development -- but one which is entirely welcome.

Sometimes "off the curve" results such as this one have to do with home advantage. Not this time. The tournament, which came to a gripping conclusion on Sunday, took place in Chile. In the last round, Argentina only needed a draw against a desperately disappointing Brazil to seal the title. But they went down 1-0 -- a result that did none of the old rivals too many...

United States, Ecuador to play Orlando friendly match on March 21

Adrian Healey and Taylor Twellman reflect on the United States' 3-0 win over Panama and what it means big picture for Gregg Berhalter.
Take another look at the USMNT as they picked up their first win with Gregg Berhalter in charge defeating Panama 3-0.

The United States men's national team will face Ecuador in Orlando on March 21 (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2), U.S. Soccer announced on Saturday.

The friendly will be Gregg Berhalter's third as coach and, falling as it does during a FIFA window, the USMNT's contingent of European players will be expected to feature. Five days after playing Ecuador, the U.S. will meet Chile in Houston.

"Ecuador has an experienced, athletic team that will provide a good test for our group. We will use this opportunity to continue...

Brazil, Argentina 'underdogs' as South America U20 Championships return

The serious stuff is about to start in one of the world's greatest showcases of emerging footballing talent. The second, decisive stage of the South American Under-20 Championships will soon be underway in Chile. Four nations have fallen by the wayside, while six remain to delight the army of European scouts and compete for the continent's four places in this year's World Under-20 Cup.

The second phase starts on Tuesday and comes to a conclusion 12 days later with a final round featuring the clash...

Ecuador FA suspends five players after reports of pre-Argentina party

ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti believes Jorge Sampaoli will employ his experience and make Argentina a force at Russia 2018.

The Ecuador Football Federation (FEF) has suspended five national team players indefinitely for indiscipline after they reportedly left their team hotel to go to a party ahead of Tuesday's 3-1 home defeat to Argentina in Quito.

In a statement on their official website the FEF named the players as Enner Valencia, Joao Plata, Gabriel Cortez, Robert Arboleda and John Cifuente.

An earlier statement from the FEF read: "Following the case of indiscipline during the national team camp ahead of Ecuador's...

Max Bretos and Herculez Gomez evaluate Lionel Messi's impact on Argentina's qualification for the World Cup.

Argentina conceded after just 37 seconds in their must-win game against Ecuador -- but Lionel Messi came to the rescue as his side booked their place at next summer's World Cup.

The number 10 hit a brace in the first half in Quito and capped off a stellar performance as he completed his hat-trick with a stunning chip over keeper Maximo Banguera just after the hour mark.

Romario Ibarra stunned the away fans -- and perhaps all of South America -- as he nodded on a ball lofted high into the danger...
