El Salvador players banned 6 and 3 games after biting U.S. players

El Salvador's Henry Romero has been suspended six games and Darwin Ceren three after they bit United States players in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, CONCACAF announced Saturday night.

Romero bit U.S. striker Jozy Altidore on the back of his shoulder and twisted his nipple before Cerin bit U.S. defender Omar Gonzalez in the second half of the Americans' 2-0 win Wednesday.

CONCACAF's disciplinary committee announced the sanctions just before the U.S. kicked off its semifinal against Costa Rica.

Landon Donovan calls for 'lengthy suspensions' for El Salvador biters

Former United States star Landon Donovan called for CONCACAF to implement "lengthy suspensions" to counter biting incidents like those seen in Wednesday's Gold Cup match.

U.S. striker Jozy Altidore was bitten on the back of a shoulder by El Salvador's Henry Romero in the second half of the Americans' 2-0 quarterfinal win, before defender Omar Gonzalez was also gnawed by Darwin Cerin.

CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani told The Associated Press that a subset of the regional body's disciplinary...

U.S. deals with nipple twisting and biting in Gold Cup win over El Salvador

PHILADELPHIA -- Just call it "50 Shades of Soccer." Wednesday's Gold Cup quarterfinal between the U.S. and El Salvador had just about everything. There was biting, nipple twisting and, oh, a couple of U.S. goals in a 2-0 win for the home side.

Yep, just another night in CONCACAF.

Jozy Altidore was the recipient of most of the unwanted advances, including a bite from El Salvador defender Henry Romero in the 59th minute. Romero later twisted Altidore's nipple, and both actions had the effect of incapacitating...

Jozy Altidore, Tim Howard laugh off bite incident as U.S. beat El Salvador

Romero, left, appeared to bite Altidore during Wednesday's Gold Cup quarterfinal. The U.S. star had the last laugh.

The U.S. battled and scrapped its way to a 2-0 win over El Salvador in Wednesday's Gold Cup quarterfinal, a game in which neither side looked at its best.

Bruce Arena's side was wobbly in defense and a little rattled up front but did enough to grab the victory. It wasn't easy, mind you, especially when El Salvador's Henry Romero was pulling every dirty trick on Jozy Altidore.

One incident midway through the second half saw Romero appear to twist Altidore's nipple before a set piece was hoofed...

The United States rode first-half goals from Omar Gonzalez and Eric Lichaj to a 2-0 win against El Salvador in the Gold Cup quarterfinals in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

The U.S. started four of the six new members it added to the squad after winning Group B, as Bruce Arena sought to bring in some veterans to help push for a sixth Gold Cup crown for the Americans.

However, El Salvador was nearly gifted an early goal when Lichaj's back pass from midfield was intercepted by El Salvador and forced...
