Israel hire former USMNT assistant Andreas Herzog as head coach

Former United States national team assistant Andreas Herzog is set to be appointed Israel coach, the Israeli FA said on Wednesday.

Vienna-born Herzog began his coaching career in 2005 as Austria's caretaker coach before taking up the assistant's role, and then leading the under-21s.

He was assistant to U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann from 2011-16 and also coached the under-23s as they attempted to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.

"Today, an agreement was reached in principle between the parties and at...

Argentina FA president Claudio Tapia apologises for canceled Israel friendly

2014's FIFA World Cup runners up Argentina have one of the strongest front lines in the world. Can Messi and co take them one step further this time and see them lift the trophy?

Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia has apologised to Israelis for the cancellation of Saturday's international friendly but maintained it was the right decision because of the threatening atmosphere surrounding the match.

The game, Argentina's final warm-up before the World Cup, was to be played in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Malha, which is situated on the site of a former Palestinian village that was destroyed during the war that established Israel 70 years ago.

Argentina cancel friendly in Israel amid protests, officials say

2014's FIFA World Cup runners up Argentina have one of the strongest front lines in the world. Can Messi and co take them one step further this time and see them lift the trophy?

Argentina have cancelled their final World Cup warm-up match against Israel that had been scheduled for Saturday, federation officials and players said on Tuesday.

The game had been a subject of controversy as it was set to be played in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Malha, which is situated on the site of a former Palestinian village destroyed during the war that established Israel 70 years ago.

The move comes in the wake of Palestinian Football Federation chief Jibril Rajoub calling on...

Eight men sentenced to jail for planned attacks on Israel at World Cup qualifier

Kosovo police officers stand near five suspects convicted of plotting a terror attack against Israel in a World Cup qualifier in 2016.
Kosovo police officers guard five of the nine people sentenced for planning an attack on Israel in 2016.

A Kosovo court sentenced nine Albanians, eight to jail, on Friday for planning an attack against Israel's football team during a World Cup qualifier in Albania in 2016.

Pristina court judge Hamdi Ibrahimi sentenced the leader of the group, Visar Ibishi, to 10 years in jail, and seven others received between 18 months and six years in prison. The ninth was given a €2,500 fine.

"There is no place for extremism on this land," Ibrahimi said. "Such defendants' acts have aimed to create both in...
