Road to the African Nations Cup is seldom easy

Algeria head coach Christian Gourcuff has admitted he needed more time to prepare his team for their African Cup of Nations Group B qualifying match against Ethiopia on Saturday.

African teams have begun their journeys to the next year's African Nations Cup (ANC) as the first group of away teams jetted off to their respective destinations ahead of the opening round of matches this weekend. Some travelling parties contained notable absentees, others struggled to get off the ground, and one left carrying little more than hope for a dream to come true.

After announcing Libya's withdrawal as host, the Confederation of African Football gave countries interested in hosting in Libya's place until the end of September -- barely a month -- to submit their bids.

Drogba retiring surprises Ivory Coast

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno and Steve Nicol contend that Didier Drogba never received the proper support from his fellow internationals.

After 12 years of service and a record 65 goals in 104 games, Didier Drogba's international retirement from the Ivory Coast at the age of 36 has been met with "surprise" by the country's federation, which said it wants to talk with the veteran striker over his decision.

Instead of expressing gratitude to its leading scorer of all time, the Ivory Coast Football Federation responded to Drogba's announcement with a statement saying it was taken off guard and hadn't been informed.

"The Ivorian Football...
