Italy, Japan and Portugal go through from Under-20 World Cup groups

Italy, Japan and Portugal advanced to the round of 16 of the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday.

Two goals from Ritsu Doan gave Japan a 2-2 draw with Italy in their Group D clash in Cheonan after Italy went 2-0 ahead within the first seven minutes.

Andrea Favilli crossed from the left for Riccardo Orsolini to volley home from close range, and shortly after Giuseppe Panico got on the end of Francesco Cassata's hurried free kick to add a second.

Japan spent much of the rest of the half pushing forward...

South Africa wasted a number of chances as they played to a 0-0 draw with Uruguay in their final Group D match to exit the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with a whimper.

Defeats in their earlier matches to Japan and Italy meant South Africa needed victory to stand a chance of being one of the four best third-place finishers, and given the quality of their chances, they should have taken all three points.

Uruguay had their opportunities too in what was an entertaining fixture, and they advance as the pool...

Zambia seal U20 World Cup qualification in thriller; Italy hopes alive

Italy kept their hopes of qualification intact with a 2-0 win over South Africa, secured by Ricarrdo Orsolini and Andrea Favilli.

The Italians produced a dominant performance and broke through when Orsolini converted a penalty before the break, with Favilli thumping home a header to put them in total control shortly before the hour mark.

Portugal suffered further frustration as they failed to hold on to a 1-0 lead and were held to a 1-1 draw by Costa Rica.

Zambia produced an outstanding comeback...

Uruguay overcome Italy in Under-20 World Cup opener

SEOUL, South Korea -- Rodrigo Amaral scored from a second-half free kick as Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 on Sunday in their opening game at the Under-20 World Cup at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

With 14 minutes remaining, Nacional forward Amaral fired home a spectacular left-footed shot to give the South American champions the only goal of the game.

Also in Group D, Japan came back from a goal down to defeat South Africa 2-1.

South Africa let early lead slip as Japan claim victory

South Africa let a halftime lead slip as they lost 2-1 to Japan in their opening Group D match at the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup on Sunday.

South Africa took an early lead through midfielder Grant Margeman and had a number of chances to increase their advantage, but goals from Koki Ogawa and Ritsu Doan sealed the victory for the Japanese.

It was a highly entertaining fixture in Suwon, with Japan also left wondering how they failed to score more goals.

The African side had the lead on seven minutes...
