MTN8 quarterfinals have significance beyond big pay-day

Gavin Hunt (L) and Paul Johnstone (assistant coach) celebrate as Bidvest Wits' title win.

The completion of the 2016/17 league season in South Africa means the match-ups in the quarterfinals of the lucrative MTN8 competition in the next campaign are now known.

The MTN8 is the first piece of silverware on offer in the 2017/18 season and comes with a hefty R8-million (approximately US$600,000) first prize, a fortune considering the league winners over a 30-game season win just R2-million more than that.

The South African Premiership came to a conclusion on Saturday, bringing the curtain down on a stop-start season that has been one of the best in recent times in terms of drama and excitement.

The last few years have felt like a procession at the top and bottom of the league table, but this year there were still 12 teams fighting for something going into the final day, even though Bidvest Wits had already been crowned champions.

KweséESPN sums up the campaign with our best and worst of the...

South Africa wasted a number of chances as they played to a 0-0 draw with Uruguay in their final Group D match to exit the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with a whimper.

Defeats in their earlier matches to Japan and Italy meant South Africa needed victory to stand a chance of being one of the four best third-place finishers, and given the quality of their chances, they should have taken all three points.

Uruguay had their opportunities too in what was an entertaining fixture, and they advance as the pool...

Plenty to play for on final day of Premier Soccer League

Bidvest Wits win the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title on 17 May 2017
Bidvest Wits win the 2016/17 Absa Premiership title on 17 May 2017
The South African league title has already gone to Bidvest Wits, but the race for the potentially lucrative top eight spots, the battle to avoid the drop, and the question of who will grab the final African Champions League qualification spot, make for an intriguing final round of matches in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.

It is a sign of the gripping 2016/17 season in South Africa that 12 of the 16 top flight sides are still fighting for position going into the final day. Fans will need to have...

Upstarts Cape Town City seek Champions League ticket

Cape Town City seek to cap off a dream maiden season in the Premier Soccer League on Saturday by finishing second in the standings, and thereby qualifying for the African Champions League next year.

But they will have to dig deep against Polokwane City away if they are to stand any chance and must hope that Mamelodi Sundowns, who are one point above them in the standings, fail to beat relegation-threatened Highlands Park at the same time on the last day of the campaign.

Cape Town City coach Eric...
