Sven-Göran Eriksson: Football needs India, China and USA

Philippines coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has tipped India to advance to the round of 16 at the AFC Asian Cup, ahead of their crucial game against Bahrain, adding that their 4-1 win against Thailand was the "biggest surprise" of the tournament.

Eriksson, who took England to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, will see his team play a must-win match themselves, against Kyrgyzstan on January 16 in Dubai, and believes advancement in the Asian Cup will be great for both countries,...

Thailand fire coach Milovan Rajevac after losing Asian Cup opener to India

Milovan Rajevac
Thailand have sacked head coach Milovan Rajevac after just one game at the AFC Asian Cup.

Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac just hours after losing 4-1 to India in the opening game of the Asian Cup on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.

The Serbian, who led Ghana to the quarterfinal of the 2010 World Cup, cut a forlorn figure at the Al Nahyan Stadium and has been relieved with two games of Group A still to play. Imagine being Anirudh Thapa, at the Al Nahyan Stadium, Abu Dhabi, in an India shirt against Thailand on Sunday.

"Amazing! Big game, for me and for India," he says, after...

India's Sunil Chhetri scored twice to help send India top of their Asian Cup group.

Sunil Chhetri overtook Lionel Messi to become the second highest-scoring active international player by netting two goals for India in their 4-1 win over Thailand at the 2019 Asian Cup.

Chhetri moved onto 67 goals, one more than Argentina and Barcelona forward Messi. Only Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead of him -- the Juventus forward has scored 85 international goals.

Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua also scored for India, who went top of Group A above host nation United Arab Emirates...

India recorded their biggest ever win at the Asian Cup

The story of Sunday's Thailand-India match at the Asian Cup in Abu Dhabi was all about India's second-half revival, rallying from a 1-1 scoreline to prevail 4-1, the biggest win in the tournament's history for the runners-up of 1964.

To get to that point, though, it would be worthwhile to remember how the first 45 minutes played out.

India and Thailand were returning to the Asian Cup fold after gaps of eight and 12 years, respectively, and there were likely to be nerves in both camps. Especially...
