Galatasaray claim Turkish Super Lig title after Fenerbahce draw

Galatasaray fans celebrated their team's title triumph in Istanbul on Monday.

Galatasaray were crowned Turkish Super Lig champions as Fenerbahce were held to a 2-2 draw at Istanbul Buyuksehir on Monday.

Galatasaray's 2-0 win over Besiktas 24 hours earlier meant Fenerbahce needed victory to ensure the title race went to the final day of the season, but the writing was on the wall for the defending champions when two goals in nine second-half minutes from Mehmet Batdal put Buyuksehir in control and Fener finished the game with just seven players.

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir to take charge of Champions League final

After a successful World Cup last summer, Cuneyt Cakir will referee the Champions League final.

UEFA has picked Cuneyt Cakir of Turkey to referee the Champions League final.

Cakir, 38, will officiate as Barcelona face Juventus at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on June 6.

Two years ago, Cakir drew criticism when he sent off Manchester United winger Nani in a Champions League last-16 loss against Real Madrid.

However, UEFA defended his decision and the official built his reputation at a successful World Cup. FIFA selected him to handle the Argentina-Netherlands semifinal in Brazil.

Match-fixing allegations vs. Galatasaray denied by Genclerbirligi

ANKARA, Turkey -- The president of Turkish club Genclerbirligi has denied accusations that his team's goalkeeper purposely gave away a decisive goal in a league game against Galatasaray.

The claim could implicate Galatasaray, who lead second-place Fenerbahce by three points with two matches remaining. Fenerbahce were barred by UEFA from three seasons of European competitions in a 2011 match-fixing scandal.
