Anghel Iordanescu steps down as Romania coach after Euro 2016 exit

Anghel Iordanescu led Romania to the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu is to step down and bring an end to his third spell in the job, the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) president has announced.

Iordanescu and the FRF agreed to the move after Romania finished bottom of Euro 2016 Group A with only a point.

The 66-year-old, who led his country to their first major tournament in eight years, had also taken them to the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Federation president Razvan Burleanu thanked Iordanescu, a former striker who has combined his career in coaching with one in politics, for "taking a great responsibility."

His third spell in charge began in October 2014, and Burleanu said a successor would be announced at the end of Euro 2016.

"We want a coach with more than 10 years of experience at high level, someone who has won trophies and will be able to lead the team to the 2018 World Cup." Burleanu was quoted as saying by Reuters.
