Atletico Madrid target Champions League final after Super Cup win - president

Craig Burley explains how the absences of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to embolden Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup triumph.

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo said the club have set the goal this season of reaching the Champions League final, which will be held in their Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

They defeated local rivals Real Madrid 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn, Estonia, on Wednesday, and Cerezo said after the game that he believes Atletico have what it takes to reach the final for the first time since 2016.

"Our objective is to improve this season, but it will be difficult," Cerezo told Movistar+....

Antoine Griezmann trolls Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos with 'coronation' image

Atletico Madrid drew first blood in their annual season-long tussle with city rivals Real on Wednesday evening, claiming the UEFA Super Cup with a 4-2 win out in Tallinn, Estonia.

Despite taking the lead in the very first minute, Atletico were still forced to come from behind, battle back to parity and ultimately wrap things up a couple of spectacular goals in extra time.

It didn't take long after the match for Antoine Griezmann to start rubbing it in, as the World Cup-winning France international...

Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane 6/10 as defensive Achilles' heel rears head

Craig Burley explains how the absences of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to embolden Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup triumph.

Atletico Madrid lifted the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn with a 4-2 victory powered by the brute force of Diego Costa. Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos scored inside the 90 minutes, but in a reverse of the 2014 Champions League final, Atletico outgunned a fading Real in extra time.

The high-tempo press Julen Lopetegui is aiming to instill showed signs of promise, an Atletico corner towards the end of the first half winding up down the other end, at Jan Oblak's feet. Marco Asensio,...

Real Madrid's Julen Lopetegui: Atletico Madrid 'punished' us in Super Cup

Craig Burley explains how the absences of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to embolden Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup triumph.

TALLINN -- Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui said "experts" Atletico Madrid "punished" his team in a 4-2 extra-time loss in the UEFA Super Cup.

It was the first meaningful match for Los Blancos without Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane and the struggle looked real after the triple Champions League holders conceded twice in extra time to come out on the losing end against Atleti.

After falling behind to an early strike from Diego Costa, goals from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos put Real back...

Diego Costa, Saul star as Atletico Madrid down rivals Real Madrid in UEFA Super Cup

Craig Burley explains how the absences of Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to embolden Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup triumph.

Atletico Madrid finally got the monkey off their back as they defeated local rivals Real Madrid 4-2 in the European Super Cup in Tallinn on Wednesday night to start the season with a trophy and perhaps give a glimpse of a changing of the guard in the Spanish capital.

Diego Costa's double, coupled with Saul Niguez's stunner and Koke's composed fourth gave Los Rojiblancos a deserved victory.

While it might not make up for the heartache suffered in Lisbon and Milan in years gone by, it could...
