ESPN+ signs deal to broadcast U.S. Open Cup matches

ESPN+ has announced a multi-year rights agreement with U.S. Soccer to brodcast matches in the U.S. Open Cup.

The deal means games from the first round to the final of the longest-running domestic cup competition in the United States will be aired exclusively on ESPN+ until 2022.

This year's tournament begins on May 7 and 8, with the first round stage featuring 38 amateur and Division III professional teams from across the United States.

Mauro Manotas scored twice off assists by Alberth Elis in the first half to lead the host Houston Dynamo to a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union in the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium on Wednesday.

It was the Dynamo's first Open Cup title and the first trophy for the organization since winning MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007.

There hadn't been a first-time winner of the Open Cup since 2001.

The U.S. Open Cup has at times been a refuge for an MLS club suffering through an otherwise forgettable season. So it proved for the Houston Dynamo, who defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-0 on Wednesday to claim its first USOC crown.

In terms of shock value, the Dynamo's run didn't quite rise to the same level as 2013 champions D.C. United, whose run to the title saw it claim more victories in the USOC (five) then it did during its entire league campaign (three). But Houston has been in poor form...
