U.S. to kick off Nations League vs. Cuba in D.C.

Herculez Gomez and Shaka Hislop weigh the pros and cons of CONCACAF's qualifying format for the 2022 World Cup, which emphasizes the FIFA rankings.

The United States will play its inaugural CONCACAF Nations League match against Cuba at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11.

The site was announced Monday by the U.S. Soccer Federation, which has yet to say where the Nov. 15 home match against Canada will be played.

As part of the new tournament, the U.S. plays its other Group A opponent Canada in Toronto on Oct. 15. The U.S. closes with another match against Cuba on Nov. 19, in a game that may be played at George Town, Cayman Islands.

"We are excited to be competing in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League where not only is a championship on the line but we are able to play meaningful games in a competitive format," said U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter. "We have seen how valuable the Nations League has been for Europe, and for this region it's another important opportunity to raise the level of competition."

In its first year under coach Gregg Berhalter, the U.S. has eight wins, three losses and one tie, losing to Mexico in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Americans have a pair of exhibitions next month against Mexico on Sept. 6 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and versus Uruguay four days later in St. Louis.
