Matildas celebrate
Australia's win over North Korea on Monday night guaranteed the Matildas a spot in Rio.

"The future of football is feminine." A famous quote, from an infamous man.

It was one of the more lucid utterings of the now disgraced former FIFA president Sepp Blatter, in his time at the helm of the World Game, but the 100,000 female players who kick a ball around the parks of Australia are unlikely to have paid it any heed.

Matildas striker Kyah Simon (17) scored a hat trick as Australia defeated Vietnam 9-0.

It may have been an expected win for the Australian women's football team over Vietnam on Wednesday, but the 9-0 victory margin has provided a massive boost for the Matildas as they continue to chase a ticket to the Rio Olympics.

The Matildas were always in control of their encounter against the outclassed south-east Asians as a Kyah Simon treble helped the Aussies to a 5-0 halftime lead in Osaka.

The Matildas didn't miss a beat, playing with confidence and fluency throughout.

Australia women's football coach Alen Stajcic says his team still have a tough road ahead if they are to secure a ticket to the Rio Olympics, despite opening their qualification campaign with a famous 3-1 win over Japan in Osaka.

It was a first-ever win for the Matildas over a former world champion in a tournament match, and the result also ended a six-match losing streak against the Asian champions and London Olympic silver medallists.
